Some very very sad news

Maddi in Thailand

On Tuesday there was a car bomb attack in Yemen on a tourist convoy.  Maddi Calleja, a very good friend, a wonderful person, and a much-loved member of the fire community was amongst those killed.  This is really shocking and still does not seem at all real to many of us.

Maddi attended both Feuerkunst and Uber Paris  this summer, making many new friends and meeting old ones.  Just two weeks later and only a day or two in to her trip and she is no longer with us.  I don’t really want to say anything just now about the situation there, the politics, or this silly war.

Instead maybe a couple things about Maddi:
What a joyous person.  Really overflowing with energy.
She was one of the thirstiest learners I’ve ever met.  Not just twirling, with everything.  All the time.
She loved to travel and find new places and people and was so open to the process.  I think the photo below is a good example of the smile that she took everywhere.  She really saw poi as a medium for spreading joy and fun and she and quite grand plans for spreading the art in Spain.  She was generous, a bit of a nutter, and we all hope that she will be replaced by many many more of her kind.  It’s what the place needs I think.

On Monday in Berlin we will be holding something of a ceremony for her.  I’d like to write more, but I’ve just started crying again, and words just aren’t enough.

Our love as a community goes out to her family and loved ones.

    Hey Tina,
I’ve emailed you some details. Hope you can make it. There is a really nice support network of people here in Berlin right now. It really helps so much.

    Take care,
    Kyle

I heard about this on friday. It was such a shock, to read about such violence on a friend, written by some random journalist…
All my love and thoughts to a wonderful person, as well as her close friends, and family.
    I still can’t believe it.

I didn’t know Maddie but I know people who do and I want to extend my sympathies and thoughts to all who have been affected by this mindless pointless act. I hope the pain of your loss is swiftly replaced with the joy you feel from your memories together.

    Thank you Kyle,
    for posting this!
It`s good to know that I´m not alone with my tears!
For I havn`t been in Berlin anymore while you where fireplaying for Maddi, I just did it at home in my garden and felt that I havn`t been the only one.
We really lost a great heart & soul-she tought me so much! I`ll miss her, but she`ll keep on living in every little thing she tought me!
    THX,
    Nina

    Noemi and Blanca,
I’m so glad to see you here, I want to send you all of my love and then some. Thank you so so much for making such a wonderful family.

I am also aware that it must be so strange to see all of this playing out in such public space (I know she was on tv a quite a bit at home too). I can only say that we all want to remember her, but to support you at the same time. I hope that the website being planned as well as the things that might go on it (a video I just made for instance) can do both. We really want to respect your wishes.

To all of the others who have commented here, thank you so much for being yourselves. I feel so so blessed to have met this wonderful person and it is nice to hear that others really felt this too.

    Love, hugs, smiles,
    Kyle
